Solid Waste Management

Municipal solid waste management planning has been required by state law since 1991 and great strides have been made throughout the entire state. The thirteen counties that comprise the GNRC have improved every aspect of their solid waste management programs including collection, transportation, disposal and recycling. GNRC has provided planning and programming technical assistance in virtually all of these areas and will continue to do so in the future.

The primary areas of GNRC involvement in FY 2002 included planning assistance, annual report preparation, recycling, education, coordinating Middle Tennessee Solid Waste Directors' meetings and serving on the Board of Directors of the Recycling Marketing Cooperative of Tennessee (RMCT). Considerable time and effort was also spent in assisting the Solid Waste Task Force that is undertaking a comprehensive review of the Solid Waste Management Act to make detailed recommendations to the Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) by June 2003. The SWAC will then use this information as the Solid Waste Management Act undergoes reauthorization review by the Tennessee General Assembly in 2004.
