2015 Rebuild Tennessee Award – The Commons at the Crossings Revitalization Project

The Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County was recently awarded the 2015 John S. Wilder Rebuild Tennessee Award for their latest revitalization project of the old Hickory Hollow Mall at the TDDA conference in Nashville. Beginning in early 2013, with assistance provided by local contractor American Constructors, Inc. principal design firm Lose & Associates, Inc. and with library consultant firm HBM Architects, the project commenced by converting the underutilized suburban retail mall into the new Southeast Regional Community Center, branch library and recreation campus for the county.

The facility includes a 79,000 square foot LEED® Silver new branch library and community center. This state-of-the-art library features designated children and youth areas, computer work stations, a community room, and café. The community center includes a new gymnasium with fitness areas, an elevated walking track, and green roof with a rooftop terrace. A new 3½ acre park replaced a former asphalt parking lot. This active park includes a quarter-mile walking trail with six fitness stations along an eight-foot wide path and playground.

The Southeast Davidson Ice Center, an 86,000 square foot LEED® Gold building, is part of this new recreation campus. This facility includes two ice rinks for recreational skating, hockey leagues and figure skating, houses staff offices, skate rental center, a pro-shop with equipment repair center, a video training room and elevated viewing room, and a full service concession facility. The facility manager of the Ice Center is the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League (NHL).

This redevelopment project incorporates many sustainable features, such as:
• Re-use/re-purposing of the existing retail mall
• Rain gardens and bio-swales to reduce runoff from the site
• Ample windows and skylights to allow natural light to flow into the building
• Geothermal heating and cooling system to reduce energy cost
• Electric car charging stations to encourage reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
• Bicycle racks to promote alternative transportation access to the site and access to mass transit to reduce parking requirements
• Native plants for environmental benefits and reduction of irrigation requirements
• Recycling program throughout the complex

This investment by the Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County, Tennessee is a catalyst to reintroduce the former Hickory Hollow Mall as a vibrant contributor to the quality of life in the Antioch and southeast Davidson County community.
